This video from animal welfare organization “compassion in world farming” shows cows going outside in spring for the first time after having been inside for several months.
This is one of the rare occasions that you can see adult cows play! In my previous post (positive emotions) I stated that play behaviour is a sign of good welfare. These cows seem to be truly happy to get some fresh air.
I have noticed similar behaviour in my sheep when they go outside after having been in indoor pens for several weeks. Interestingly, sheep do not really show signs of poor welfare while inside. They seem pretty comfortable as long as they have sufficient space, comfy resting places and plenty of tasty food. It’s only when they go back outside that they show how much they have missed it!
